SUMMARY:
This 8-week online workshop starts on March 17 and runs through May 12, 2019.
The workshop will be led by 7 Barrelhouse editors, each of whom will serve as the lead for one week, with all hands on deck in our final week.
Every week, we will focus on a specific area of craft: the lead editor will post a brief lecture/essay, some reading samples, and a writing prompt. Prompts will be posted to the general space and will be workshopped by the class and that week’s instructor.
Registration is $250.
Participation is limited to 12 people.
HOW WILL OUR WORKSHOP WORK?
Each week, our instructor will post a brief lecture about a specific area of craft pertaining to the short story, along with some reading and a writing prompt. The workshop will function on a Sunday to Sunday basis, so this will happen on Sunday. By Friday, we’ll ask participants to post their responses to the prompt, and those will be discussed and workshopped by participants and the instructor.
At the same time, we’ll have several open discussions about publishing, submitting, markets for work, and any additional areas of craft that participants want to talk about.
The workshop is open for writers of all experience levels.
WHAT’S THE WORKSHOP EXPERIENCE LIKE?
The workshops are run using the Canvas learning management system, a user-friendly, cloud-based education forum, which means, this is a virtual space. You can check in and out according to what works for your schedule within the parameters of the course and participants don’t have to be in a certain place at a certain time. We will stick to the Sunday to Sunday schedule, and will strongly encourage everybody to be posting their writing prompts by Friday COB.

Dave Housley is the author of the novel This Darkness Got to Give, and co-author with Becky Barnard on the upcoming sci-fi YA novel The Greys. He has published four story collections: Massive Cleansing Fire, If I Knew the Way, I Would Take You Home, Commercial Fiction, and Ryan Seacrest is Famous. His work has appeared in Booth, Hobart, McSweeneys, Mid-American Review, Quarterly West, Wigleaf, and some other online and print magazines. He is one of the founding editors of Barrelhouse and co-founders of the Conversations and Connections writer's conference.
Mike Ingram's stories and essays have appeared in a number of magazines and journals, including The North American Review, Phoebe, December, and EPOCH. He is the Books Editor for Barrelhouse. A graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop, he now lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches at Temple University and co-hosts the weekly Book Fight podcast. After that, we’re locked in and can’t provide a refund.
