Saw kept his eyes closed but imagined opening them, seeing night. The sun would have set, everything gone dark. The clouds would be gone, the sky a dome of deep blue, and shining through the darkness, the full moon, a flashlight on their diorama of a world.

At the time, Lee Klein was kind of known for writing these overlong, sometimes mean, oftentimes essays in and of themselves, rejection letters. I’m not sure if I wrote the story in part to try to get a good rejection out of him or specifically submitted to Eyeshot for such but I remember kinda preparing for a “Lee Klein” rejection and being surprised when it was instead accepted.
